The University of Maribor (UM) is a dynamic, international-oriented public university in the heart of Slovenia and the EU. We actively support incoming and outgoing staff mobility, joint teaching, training, and project cooperation within Erasmus+ and university alliances.
1. European university in a safe, student-friendly city
Maribor is a compact, affordable and green city, very easy to navigate for visiting academics and administrative staff. Everything (campus, dorms, city centre) is within walking distance, and English is widely spoken at the university.
2. Strong focus on internationalisation
UM has been systematically developing internationalisation at home (Erasmus doma) and welcomes a growing number of incoming students and staff every year. Visiting staff can easily be integrated into existing courses, workshops, language activities (Polyglot Café), or mentoring of international students.
3. Easy to cooperate with
The university has clear procedures for Erasmus+ staff mobility (teaching and training), provides support through the International Relations Office, and has long-term partnerships across Europe. If you come through Erasmus+, we can help you connect with the right faculty, course or administrative unit.
4. Teaching in English
Many study programmes and individual courses are offered in English, which makes it easier for guest lecturers to deliver classes or workshops and to work with mixed groups of domestic and international students.
5. Research and project opportunities
UM is active in EU-funded projects (Erasmus+, Horizon, CEEPUS, capacity building, blended intensive programmes) and is open to joint applications. Staff mobility can be a starting point for future project cooperation, curriculum development or virtual exchange (COIL).
6. Supportive environment
Incoming staff can expect:
assistance with mobility documents,
help in finding teaching/training opportunities,
contact with international students and staff,
possibility to present their home institution.
7. Strategic location
Slovenia lies between Austria, Italy, Hungary and Croatia – a good starting point for regional cooperation, study visits or joint events within Central and South-East Europe.
Maribor, the capital of the Štajerska region, is the second largest city in the country but at the same time it is nicely small and green. Its lively throb, superior culture and events, rich wine tradition and the oldest vine in the world, numerous possibilities for entertainment, relaxation and exercise in nature, as well as its reputation of relaxed openness and hospitality also led Maribor to the honorary title of European Capital of Culture 2012 and European Youth Capital 2013.
The city of Maribor merges with the wonderful nature of Pohorje’s forests and picturesque wine growing hills in one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Slovenia. A quick trip up Pohorje, a green wonder of the Slovenian mountains that attracts hikers, bikers, adrenaline seekers, as well as lovers of peace to Pohorje’s primeval forest, waterfalls, streams, and peat moors. During the winter, as the largest ski resort in Slovenia, snow blanketed Maribor Pohorje extends a warm welcome.
